Overview

Shark’Eat! is a local 1v1 game: one player is the shark trying to eat as many fish as possible (some add points, some subtract), and the other player runs a bubble cannon trying to stop the shark by blowing bubbles.

After the round ends, players swap roles. Highest total score wins.

What players do (rounds)

  1. Round 1: Shark eats fish to score. Cannon blows bubbles to slow and push the shark away.
  2. Round 2: Swap roles.
  3. Final score: Total fish eaten minus negative fish.

Responsibilities

  • Designed funny gameplay mechanics for 1vs1 local multiplayer
  • Developed an innovative arcade game with Arduino-based gesture control
  • Implemented custom gyro sensor integration in Unity
  • Led development team and coordinated project milestones
  • Optimized hardware interaction and game performance

Achievements

  • Most Original Game Award: First place in originality category at Global Game Jam 2025
  • Best Use of Diversifiers: Recognition for creative use of hardware integration

Controls (the fun part)

Originally we built custom controllers instead of a normal gamepad:

  • Shark controller: a 3D-printed fish with a gyroscope/accelerometer inside. You rotate the physical fish to steer the shark.
  • Bubble cannon: an analog joystick for aiming plus a microphone input. You literally blow to generate bubbles.

For the public demo version we also added a keyboard fallback.

Hardware setup (Arduino)

The Arduino reads inputs from:

  • Joystick (analog aim)
  • MPU (gyroscope/accelerometer)
  • Microphone module (blow detection)

If you want to replicate the original setup, you’ll need an Arduino (e.g. UNO), joystick, MPU-6050, mic module, and a printed shell for the shark controller.
